Glastonbury
Although Glastonbury is most famous for its annual music festival, the town is also known as the “quirkiest in England.” For this reason, it attracts significant attention for its rich religious, pagan, and mythical history. First, we’ll visit the ruins of Glastonbury Abbey. Which became one of the many architectural victims of Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries in the 1500s. It’s here you’ll find the Holy Thorn. Which people say descended from the staff of Joseph of Arimathea and flowers twice a year, at Easter and Christmas. Furthermore, Glastonbury Abbey also claims to be the final resting place of the legendary King Arthur and Queen Guinevere.
After you explore the abbey, you’ll also have the chance to climb Glastonbury Tor to St. Michael’s Tower. This site is steeped in its own mystery; some associate it with King Arthur and Celtic mythology, while others believe it is where the Holy Grail is buried. From the top, you’ll see spectacular views across the Somerset plains.
Cheddar
Next, we’ll visit Cheddar, the famous home of Cheddar cheese and the discovery site of the Cheddar Man. He is the oldest complete human skeleton ever found in Britain, and a remarkable find estimated to be 9,000 years old. Once in the town, you can explore the various cheese shops and cafes. You also have the option to enter the underground caves where prehistoric man once resided. For those who feel more adventurous, you can take a walk across the cliff edge and admire the spectacular views overlooking the gorge.
We include your entrance to Glastonbury Abbey in the tour. Conversely, you can buy admission to the Cheddar Caves on the day if you choose to go, subject to availability and opening times.
