Harry Potter Studio Tour

Full tour details below, but first some history of Alnwick Castle the fictional Hogwarts,

Alnwick Castle is a castle and country house in Northumberland, England. It was established after the Norman conquest and refurbished several times to house the 12th Duke of Northumberland. Ralph Percy, 12th Duke of Northumberland and his family live in this Grade I listed building. Together with the Alnwick Garden, the castle attracted over 600,000 visitors in 2016.

Only portion of the castle is home to the present duke and his family. Visitors can tour the castle all summer. The second-largest inhabited castle in England is behind Windsor. According to the Historic Houses Association, Alnwick was the ninth most visited stately home in England in 2006 with 195,504 visitors. This number has risen dramatically in the past decade.

Newcastle Church High School for Girls was evacuated to Alnwick Castle during WWII. After the war, the castle was used by Alnwick College of Education, a teacher training college, from 1945 to 1977, and by St. Cloud State University of Minnesota as a branch campus for their International Study Programme since 1981.

Three castle boundary towers house special exhibitions. In addition to an exhibition showcasing the Dukes of Northumberland’s interest in archaeology, the Postern Tower has Pompeii paintings, Egyptian artefacts, and Romano-British objects. The Percy Tenantry Volunteers exhibition, local volunteer soldiers created to repel Napoleon’s 1798–1814 invasion, located in Constable’s Tower. The Royal Northumberland Fusiliers Regimental Museum is at Abbot’s Tower.

The castle’s role as Hogwarts’ exterior and interior in the Harry Potter films increased public interest in it. Its appearance in films has shaped public perception of castles. It contrasts with most castles in the nation, which are decrepit and uninhabitable.
