Austria’s Tyrol is a historical Alps region in northern Italy and western Austria. The territory was the core of the County of Tyrol, part of the Holy Roman Empire, Austrian Empire, and Austria-Hungary from the 12th century to 1919. After World War I and the disintegration of Austria-Hungary, the Treaty of Saint-Germain-en-Laye separated it into two contemporary administrative parts in 1919:

Austrian state of Tyrol was formed by merging North and East Tyrol. Region of Trentino-Alto Adige: In 1918, the Kingdom of Italy conquered Souramont (Cortina d’Ampezzo, Livinallongo del Col di Lana, and Colle Santa Lucia) and Valvestino, Magasa, and Pedemonte, which became part of the Italian Republic in 1946.
From 2011, Tyrol-South Tyrol-Trentino has had its own legal organisation, the European Grouping for Territorial Cooperation.

According to Egon Kühebacher, Tyrol comes from a root word signifying terrain (i.e. territory, ground, or soil; compare Latin: terra and Old Irish: tir), initially from the settlement of Tirol and its castle, from which the County of Tyrol grew. Some accounts say it comes from Slavic “ta rola” meaning “this land, farming terrain/farming ground.” Karl Finsterwalder says Tyrol comes from Teriolis, a late-Roman fort and travellers’ hostel in Zirl, Tyrol. Scholarly consensus is lacking.

Inn Valley offers views of Kufstein and Pendling mountain. Tyrol covers 26,673 km2. The region includes Tyrol, South Tyrol, and Trento. The Veneto municipalities Cortina d’Ampezzo, Livinallongo del Col di Lana, Colle Santa Lucia, and Pedemonte and the Lombardy municipalities Valvestino and Magasa also belong to the region. Tyrol’s largest cities are Innsbruck, Trento, and Bolzano.

Tyrol is entirely Alps-based. Tyrol borders Bavaria to the north and Carinthia and Salzburg to the east. Vorarlberg and Grisons are west of Tyrol. Tyrol borders Veneto and Lombardy in the south.

The Adige, Inn, and Drau are important Tyrol rivers. The region has various valleys. Today, certain valleys are hard to reach. The Inn and Adige valleys matter most. A substantial portion of the population lives in these two valleys, which also house Tyrol’s five largest cities (Innsbruck, Bolzano, Trento, Merano, and Rovereto). Transit trade has characterised the region for millennia. The Brenner Route, the most major commerce route across the Alps, crosses Tyrol and connects Italian and German-speaking regions.
