San Vino Wine Fight Festival, Spain

Known locally as “La Batalla de Vino de Haro,”. The San Vino Wine Fight is your chance to experience one of the world’s great red wine regions in a truly unique way. Prepare to be drenched from head to toe in wine that. While this wine does not meet the region’s top-tier standards, it certainly won’t go to waste!

This experience includes entry into the battle and a comfortable stay in our camping accommodations. Complete with sleeping mats and sleeping bags. Enjoy an open bar serving beer, wine, and sangria. Also a delicious daily brunch featuring a cooked breakfast buffet and bottomless mimosas.  The guides will show you the ropes. Plus you’ll get a welcome local cheese and wine tasting and of course plenty of red wine too.

San Vino Wine Fight

The Haro Wine Fight, known locally as the Batalla del Vino, stems from a fascinating,centuries-old land dispute. Between the picturesque town of Haro and its neighbour Miranda de Ebro. While that particular dispute is now happily resolved, the vibrant, wine-soaked tradition of the Wine Fight lives on with more fervour than ever! Each year, locals of all ages from Haro and the surrounding Rioja region gather alongside enthusiastic travellers from across the globe for this truly unique and exhilarating event.

The epicentre of this liquid battle is a hillside overlooking the stunning, sprawling vineyards of La Rioja. Here, participants engage in an uninhibited, joyous frenzy, dousing each other with wine using every imaginable implement: buckets, water pistols, garden sprayers, and any other vessel they can find to launch a purple deluge. And for those concerned about wasted vino, fear not! No good wine goes to waste here. The wine generously used in the fight is specifically designated as not being of a high enough quality for bottling or commercial sale.

After the boisterous battle concludes, it naturally flows back down the mountain, ingeniously fertilising the very vineyards it came from. The Haro Wine Fight is a fantastic and rapidly growing Spanish fiesta, a true celebration of community and exuberance. It’s an absolute must-see for wine enthusiasts, dedicated party-goers, and anyone seeking a truly unique, unforgettable travel experience that’s unlike anything else in the world.

What should I bring?

  • Make sure to pack sunglasses and sunscreen as it gets quite hot. For your tent, bring a pillow and a torch. You’ll also want goggles, a waterproof camera, and swimwear for a post-battle dip in the pool. Don’t forget old shoes you don’t mind getting rid of after the madness, and shampoo if you want to avoid red-stained hair for a month! And of course, a towel is essential.

Are there hot showers to wash off my wine-stained body?

  • Yes, showers are available at the campsite, and we highly recommend using them at the end of the day.

What do I wear? Do I need goggles?

  • Goggles are recommended if you want to ensure clear vision, though sunglasses can also work.
