If you arrive at amsterdam central station early in the day there are heaps of hotel touts around who will try to get you to stay at their hotel (they get paid for the people they bring in). The rooms are nothing special but accomdation in amsterdam is usually bad and expensive anyway. Barter with the touts and get the best deal you can, but a double room (shared bathroom etc) you are looking at around 35-50 NLG each, in a hostel you are looking at around 25NLG each for a room with about 16 other people.
The same applies to London. I suggest Earls Court for a start as there are heaps of dodgey (but quite safe) hostels around the area and there are touts at the tube station. Prices vary depending on the type of room (dorm or double) but a double will cost you around £12 each a night. You could try these hotels:

*I cant guarentee the quality of the rooms but the best areas to stay in are around the west, earls court, sheperds bush, bayswater. If you can't book in advance, the first thing to do when you arrive is pick up a copy of TNT magazine (Free). there are heaps of gardens in London and lots of free mueseums/exhibitions. Buy food in supermarkets for lunch and dinner (stay somewhere that has cooking facilities you can use, some of the places I have listed do)Posted on Budgettravel message board: Posted by Jan Caldwell In Reply to: London Hostel - Anyone stayed in one?
