The Feast of Saint Patrick is a religious and cultural celebration celebrated on March 17th, the traditional death date of Ireland’s patron saint, Saint Patrick (c. 385-461).
Catholics, Anglicans (particularly the Church of Ireland), Eastern Orthodox Christians, and Lutherans celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day, which was declared a Christian feast day in the early 17th century. The day honours Saint Patrick, Christianity in Ireland, and Irish culture. Parades, festivals, céilithe, and shamrocks are typical celebrations. Liturgical Christians attend church services. Previous Lenten restrictions on eating and drinking alcohol were abolished for the day, which encouraged mass alcohol consumption on the holiday.
Saint Patrick’s Day is a public holiday in Ireland, Northern Ireland, Newfoundland and Labrador (for provincial government employees), and Montserrat. Tourism Ireland’s “Global Greening Initiative” or “Going Green for St. Patrick’s Day” has lit up notable locations in green on Saint Patrick’s Day since 2010.First to participate were the Sydney Opera House and Auckland Sky Tower, but now over 300 monuments in 50 nations have gone green for Saint Patrick’s Day.
